The history of the acceptance of orientations is a process from the assumption of faulty development ( without any proof, ) to the understanding that sexual orientations aren't diseases, don't have etiologies and are represented in people from all backgrounds and all experiences.
Homosexuality isn't caused by clingy Mothers, detached Fathers, too much masturbation, too little Heterosex, brain injury, the demon weed........
Arguments to the contrary are just hate speech masquerading as pop-psychology.
And given that there was an industry on the lecture circuit for faulty analysis by nons ( with special guesting roles for the self-loathing queer ) it was particularly insidious to poison the minds of young queers by telling them that they were defective heterosexuals. ( Though those high suicide rates must be indicative that queers are unstable, and that none can ever really be happy. It has nothing to do with telling them that difference is a disease. Yeah, sure. )
Fortunately it makes it easier to recognize bigotry when it doesn't even try to dress itself up before trying the same hogwash out on a different target.
Imagine the stupidity of trying to claim a cause for Heterosexuality, or homosexuality, or....
Well, no sooner does one say that X is the culprit, then one has to explain away the sheer number of folks with the sexual orientation who lack X.

But of course Heterosex ( and now Homosexuality ) enjoy "White Privilege" and don't have to come up with spurious etiologies. We can just say that they "are." This is also true of Pedophilia, but the hate speech relating to it is still socially acceptable in most circles.
