Why assume that?

It is simply about that particular aspect dominating what they see about themselves as being the most important thing. Beauty, whilst admirable, fades with time whilst personality and all the things that bring true happiness and success can grow with time. It is especially troublesome because if it is an issue when so young then it might continue to dominate their lives. The US does it seem have a fixation with beauty and youth - plastic surgery etc - why?
