Over half of the US spending is entitlements, and a lot of the rest is still social programs.

The "staggering" amount of money the U.S. spends per year on the military is made clear in this 2013 article from The Washington Post, which is as mainstream as U.S. newspapers come, and hardly liberal. Even after the 2013 austerity measures in fiscal spending were implemented, the U.S. government still spends more money on military than all other nations combined, with a huge amount going to funding the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan over the past decade. The amount it spends on international military aid is still part of that budget, and often considered a sub-category. Much of this aid, however, comes at the expense of allowing the U.S. to maintain permanent large military bases and presence in those countries, which helps facilitate its imperialist agenda.

You will see this easily matched the budget for social security, which the conservatives and libertarians would love to privatize and turn into a form of stock market gamble. Spending on the U.S.'s government medical insurance programs, Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIPS, was a mere percentage point greater in 2011, and these programs are constantly under assault for austerity measures too, and there are still very strong limits on who can get them, and what they cover when you do, to the point that a large percentage of U.S. citizens of all ages are either not covered at all or inadequately covered (e.g., bare bones). A mere 13% goes to safety net programs, which is extremely low compared to the "social democratic" nations in Europe, and a very mere 2% on education. This is not merely great compared to other nations, but greater than all other nations' expenditures combined.
