I think the idea is that family is good and all but it doesn't need to be nuclear. The neighbors identified as family and their only connection was in being native to the island. I think the movie simply expands the definition of family. Also I find it sad the idea that a man can't be part of children's welfare. That's a backlash I think is stupid.

I'm not woke. But I also think conservatism has it's old fuddy duddy ideas.
