look at it like this. let's imagine you are hanging from a ledge, 200 feet above a concrete highway. you know that a certain amount of effort will ensure your fingers remain locked on the slender hold that keeps you from plummeting to your death, but yet you exert even more effort than required.

why? what possible use does that extra effort serve?
