Well, it could be more primitive than you are giving it credit for. Perhaps it isn't exact. Survival, I don't reckon, is based on what I think is going to save me, but rather instinctual. That is why most animals will over-eat if they have an unlimited food supply, even until sickness and death.

When people do it, we call them stupid.
