Mostly what we have said here is that we need more facts.

Yes, people have survived horrible beatings.

But on the other hand, sometimes people die when they fall and hit their head, or when a baseball hits their chest at just the right spot at just the right moment to disrupt their heartbeat.

We simply don't have the facts, and unlike some stories ("Vigilante hunts down RSOs") this story gives indications that the father may have been in the right - or at least, not entirely in the wrong. It is true that the trial may be stacked in his favor, but a trial to determine the facts is what is needed in a case like this.
