She is agitated and troubled. Relationships with family and others are strained. There must be a cause.
Well, not necessarily so. In our culture we treat unease and tension as symptoms and seek any etiology and any remedy. And yet, their presence doesn't necessarily imply that there is a simple cause which, once diagnosed, will release us from all ills.
Its as if there is a false dichotomy in which an outside source must be sought lest the sufferer be treated as the cause and blamed.
Whereas many of our emotions are easier to deal with when we start with simply "I feel," and not with "YOU make me feel."
But in addition to the drive for an answer ( whether or not there can be an answer, ) we see many features of the typical Alien Abduction scenario.
The absence of a memory is treated as a "suppressed gap." Its not enough to say, "I spaced out while driving," or "I don't remember." Instead, one must search for the contents which presumably fill the gap.
Whereas, in most cases, such as highway hypnosis, the absence of information signifies its staggering dullness, not its staggering drama.
Unfortunately, there are therapists who will not turn away such a patient, but will instead fill the gap with a scenario which fits the patient's nonsituational anxiety and coincides with a period where memory is absent.
Usually, though, those who are most susceptible to such charlatans are those who blur the line between fantasy and reality. Those who are readily hypnotized. And those who are most inclined to treat dreams and waking as if they are interchangeable.
Whitley Streiber's Alien Abduction memories fit all of these, including "memories" recalled from dreams as if dreaming were a source of real events.
This to me is also telling; that she counts her dreams as evidence of the guilt of real people in waking life.
The combo of "I recall nothing... which means that something happened," along with "I dreamt it, therefore something happened," fit a situation which tends to produce demonstrably false memories of the improbable; and ( depending on the "therapist," ) the impossible.
