Once your personal survival is assured, then the propagation of your genes into the next generation, to ensure that a part of you continues after our death, is the next priority.
A child is your immortality. Anyone who messes with your child is messing with your survival, your immortality, your chance to live on in some form after the body which you inhabit has gone to the big playground in the sky.
It isn't so much that children are more valuable; most adults do not like children, other than their own, and sometimes only tolerate their own offspring. It's an ego trip: this is MY immortality, and don't you mess with it.
This may be the biggest reason why children, instead of being allowed to grow unimpeded (free-range children, as it were) are "raised" as if they are crops to be pruned and bent and shaped and molded into carbon copies of the parents, if for no other reason than to validate the parent's existence (see, I can't be all bad; here's another human just like me).
Almost as a rule of thumb, the less secure a parent is, the more they stifle their child's growth. It takes a mature, self-confident individual to allow a child to develop freely.
Unfortunately, our society does not encourage this, since people begin reproducing way before they are emotionally ready.
