I hear a lot of hostility towards psychiatry in these answers. And indeed there is a lot there to question, and a lot of cases they can be challenged, especially the ones having to do with socially undesirable conditions.
However, there is a bunch of psychiatry and psychology with treatments that are helpful. A guy comes in, saying he's got visions and hallucinations and incredibly disturbing thoughts, the doctor prescribes some medicine, and he's a lot happier and wouldn't dream of stopping the medicine. Someone says she's incredibly sad all the time, the doctor gives her an antidepressant, and she's a lot happier and loves the medicine and starts living the kind of life she wants. I wonder if you skeptics would consider an exception for self-perceived problems like these. I suppose you could argue that these folks are just accepting labels that society dumps on them, but -- give me a break. No one wants to feel suicidal all the time. |
