This emphasises the point that children up to this age and a little beyond are so vulnerable. The power differential is inherent in the nature of adults and children, and how children generally view adults.

Yes, but the power differential can be a positive thing, because a child can not only recieve the romance and affection typical of a relationship among peers, but also a great sense of security and mentorship. It's the best of both worlds--romantic and parental love--rolled into one.

I think the danger lies in the confusions that may arise due to the different roles of adults and children. There is a gradual transfer of autonomy as children grow but there is inevitably a 'difference' that cannot be overcome due to the nature of birth and growing. I am sure we do not have the full story with regard to psychological development yet but I think, along with most professionals, there are inherent dangers to adult-child relationships that include a sexual element that may not be fully appreciated by the child.
