Mental health of pedophiles

"my experience is that pedophiles are comparatively not a mentally healthy group of people"

Not too long ago RBL posted that he needed therapy and I flippantly replied that it would not help. That sent me then on a quest for better understanding of modern therapy services.

I learned that the pessimistic critical analytic deconstruction of Freud has been improved (or perhaps replaced) by "positive therapy". Still I was not that in love with the idea of useful therapy.

Then a friend of mine was tagged with a legal complaint of a sexual nature from a minor girl. He draws strength from therapy. I doubt that he has revealed much about the legal issue to the therapist but we have discussed some of the modern techniques of shame, courage and vulnerability resilience and I suddenly realized how little I could participate in that process given my secret attraction. I wonder now just what such therapy with a trusted confidential therapist could do to improve my mental health. I get very depressed at times and generally I'm not a happy person. Also, for obvious reasons I dont fully connect with people, courage to be open with them is not a good option.

Soooo . . . I am now thinking that pedophilia legal confidentiality for therapists may be the most important change I would like to see happen. I would love to have true open therapy available to see if it would work for me.

Next step is to look into how to safely get involved in lobbying for that change.

Am I crazy?
