Rome fell when its public servants confounded their interests with Rome's interest, and when the states became seen as a source of revenue for the power-elite in the Capital, not as the raison d'être for the Empire's existence.

In Gibbon's Decline and Fall he traces the collapse from the succession of Marcus Aurelius. But its not until the Severan line that all the checks and balances were cut off. Too often the Senate were merely lapdogs of the Emperor; but when they were circumvented entirely this ensured that no future legislators with a spine would ever correct the flaws of a bad Emperor.

Hmmm. Any lessons for today?

While it could be argued that the sickness at the core of Rome began during the Pagan period what is certain is that it fell on the watch of the Christians. And Gibbon lays some of the blame at Christian values which prized the hereafter more highly than the here and now.

But there have been many more theories put forth for the Fall of Rome ⚠️ ↗ in the last 200 + years. And none which are credible claim that the Fags and Peds who created and sustained Greco-Roman civilization at its height are to blame for its latter decay under anti-moralists.

One must appreciate the irony of The Sack of Rome coming so quick upon the disbandment of the Vestals by anti-Pagan Emperor Theodosius I.
