Researcher quote: "Yes, there are some pedophiles that seek the dismantling of age-of-consent laws and that society accept their attractions. But most are like Adam and they want to control their desires."
See, here is what this researcher fails to understand, which proves that he/she needs to talk to a lot more MAPs, including the many who support the pro-choice and pro-youth rights ideology, before making these pseudo-professional pronouncements. They need to stop limiting their research to the guilt-ridden, self-hating category of MAP, and start engaging not only with the wider community, but with the large amount of research data that does not in any way scientifically validate the "abuse" narrative.
Moreover, this statement once again seems to promote the banal assumption that those of us who support freedom of choice and oppose the AoC laws out of principle are routine law-breakers and have no inclination to "control" our desires. To the contrary, most pro-choicers adhere very strictly to the laws despite how we feel about them out of principle, because we believe it's very unwise for all concerned on many levels to brazenly violate these laws. We also feel it's necessary to make this major compromise with society, while working hard to prove we are human beings and seeking to make progressive changes in many laws by working within the system.
LOD: For good reason? What is that? You can't just say for good reason and that not say what those reasons are. It shows that you're not really thinking about what you are saying, you're just saying it.
When supposedly well-intentioned researchers make offensive statements like this, they need to realize they are going to alienate many in the MAP community. They are pushing a doctrine of pathology and self-hatred on us based on a rampant moral belief system, not information that has anything to do with science, or reality. There are many objective scientifically-minded researchers out there studying the dynamics of the MAP attraction bases, but they are drowned out by the voices of those who irresponsibly push the political agenda of pathologizing pedosexuality, ignoring how common it actually is despite the social taboo and legal prohibitions regarding it. These less responsible and politically motivated researchers push this inaccurate doctrine because they know that the moralizing majority wants to hear it, even if the scientific community doesn't have their back on the matter.
LOD: Yeah, so? What's so bad about that? Homosexuals fought to change the laws too. Was that wrong?
The answer to the above question regarding homosexuality that you would likely be given by society-at-large and most researchers would largely depend on what particular era you asked it. Researchers like the one you quoted block out of their mind any possibility that what they say today may be considered wrong in the decades to come, despite the rich degree of precedence regarding attitudes about blacks, women, homosexuals, etc., in past decades.
Secondly, how do you know that most are like Adam? Where did you get that from? I have to doubt that you're sincere about understanding pedophiles when you make stuff up about pedophiles without evidence.
Moralizing agendas and crusades are based on assumptions and heart-felt belief, not evidence. In fact, it's a common claim by such individuals that proof or evidence should not be required to make their conclusions; it all stems from how they feel about the matter.
Think I should give him points for at least trying?
I say give him a few, but not a lot. He may indeed be sincere in trying, but he has a long way to go, and a huge amount of research to conduct, before I would consider his work fully legit. Connecting the MAP attraction bases directly to the abuse narrative developed over the past few decades is certainly a good way to offend much of the community, and detract from scientific objectivity in favor of a specific political agenda. The sex abuse narrative is a psychological and sociological phenomenon, not a scientific one.
