Frankly from what was said in the post I thought it was more of a joke than anything. My initial assumption was that the shop attendant probably spoke to the girl in Spanish because he knew she understood the language, and that her reply was in relation to what had been said. Her reply could also have meant that she did not understand Spanish, hence telling it to someone who cares would mean someone who understands it. It probably shows how unfamiliar I am with this part of American culture that I had no idea how this could be seen as racist.

It could be seen as rude, but in the context of children being expected to be all quiet and obedient (that is where age does in fact come into it), it is refreshing to hear of a young girl speaking assertively (not that this is necessarily unusual).
