Giving in order to be 'validated' is distasteful.

If anyone here wants to make a donation in order to try and help improve the lot of kids in poor countries, then why not use one of the charities that already exist to do just that? If these charities are inadequate and somebody has an idea about a better way to do things, then they should be promoting that idea to as broad a section of donators as possible, not just a bunch of pervs on the Internet. And why the hell should our giving money to help kids be about ‘validating’ ourselves? Emphasising the paedoness of the money we choose to donate is fatally mixing two separate goals. The goal of helping kids in poor countries is a valid one, but it can’t not be tainted by being used as a showcase of our good side. It’ just so transparent, and it’s going to disgust a lot of people, seeing us try to use the existence of destitute children to advance our own social standing. It's transparent when 'straight' people give selfishly, and it's no less transparent when we do it. It just has more negative consequences. Remember that the game is rigged. Lots of people make donations to charity to feel good about themselves, and to show off that ‘goodness’ to others, but when we do the same thing it’s beyond the pale. Until that changes, this sort of “gesture” is only going to cause more grief.

Nobody except a few of the more woolly posters on boards like these is likely going to fall for this. Hopefully it’ll fizzle out and die quietly the same way BLcharity.net did, before it has a chance to do even more damage to our public standing.
