I see the debate about paedophilia very much the same as for religious belief such that if one is disposed to the latter then very few will be open to the possibility, seen by those with no religious belief, myself included, that they are all mistaken since they are unable to step outside of the belief system to look with a different set of eyes. Not being religious I am not sure what exactly is the barrier to seeing differently but possibly it is because the desire to believe remains such that all evidence will not be perceived without some attached value. We do know it is extremely difficult to be able to even gather a suitable amount of concrete evidence let alone look dispassionately at this.

A famous Christian apologist proverb says "There are no Atheists in trenches." It means that in circumstances where people's lives are in danger and they are powerless to stop the danger, of which war trenches is one, they turn to religion, even if they were not religious before.

In a way that can be generalized; strong and extreme changes in circumstance bring about their own changes in thought. The history of Modernity is the best example, I think, and with it the rise and temporarily the success of the two most quintessentially Modern ideologies: Communism and Fascism.

I like the analogy. I am still musing how precise or imprecise it is, but I like it.

Now, of course, Dante and Baldur are Atheists (or were the last time asked), although both are rather literate in religion. I am religious and have been for as far as I can remember and it's not likely to change - might have even went for a ministerial career though in the end I didn't. We haven't had any religion thread lately, but it shows.

Regarding our thinking, I think much the same applies to paedophilia since unless one is capable of removing the sexual attraction and looking at the issue from the perspective of one without such an attraction then it will probably not be possible to perceive paedophilia and all surrounding issues differently.

At the aggregate level you are right that having the orientation informs our views, of course. But at the personal level it's questionable that it informs it in a pro direction. Pedos here are (obviously) biased towards being "pro". But pedos overall? We have seen many, many pedos who are "anti", both here and outside here. Of course pedos who are anti will be fighting against these places, not joining them. Gays are way past this stage in Western countries, but it was the stage they were in a few decades ago - where "proud" gays coexisted with gays wanting to "convert" themselves and others into heterosexuals.

Since I do myself still have such an attraction to children I am not a particularly judgemental person with regard to this issue and so I hope I do come across as courteous and respectful to the members here even if I will disagree on many points.

You have.

:)

I know there are some very intelligent people on this forum but I personally would rather see them applying their minds in other ways rather than trying to defend what I see as a faulty attraction

I think it's the greatest human rights issue of our time. That said, it doesn't mean that I don't apply pressure in other issues. I just don't do it on GC. Reasons to compartmentalize; plus security... yeah, better that way.
