Two GMs - one sweet, one sad.

Along with today's collection of little smiles and exchanged pleasentries, there were two GMs which stuck in my mind.

One was with a little girl of about 5 or 6. She was absolutely lovely, with golden hair and shiny deep blue eyes. She was asking her mum if she could have something for her birthday, to which her mum commented that her birthday was a long way off, apparently the same month as mine, which I told her :-) She then proudly showed me her wobbly tooth, her first apparently! We then talked for a while about the tooth fairy and she told me she had lots of books about fairies :-) We talked a lot more about her brother, her easter holidays and all sorts of other things. She was just SOOO sweet :-)

The other was a little different.

One of my regular customers came in. She's a young-ish girl, about 13 or 14 I think. Not at all sexy I'm afraid but still fun and certainly much better company than most adults. Anyway, she often comes in and talks to me. Today, after chatting for a bit, she called out:

"Come on L, we need to pay!"

I asked,

"Who'se L?"

She said it was her freind. Now, knowing this girl as I do, I half expected this friend to be imaginary, or at least a stuffed toy of some description, but then round the corner came a girl I can only describe as a beautiful waife.

It made me sad, however, because although she was enchantingly beautiful, she had an air of sadness about her. Most children look fairly dishevelled a lot of the time, especially during school holidays, but this girl looked somehow uncared for. The most obvious example was her teeth which were worn, broken and obviously in need of a little TLC from a dentist. My friend said that this girl was a year older than her, making her 14 or 15 but she didn't look more than 10! She was small, skinny and fragile-looking, and very quiet.

I found myself feeling how I imagine those altruistic victorian girl-lovers must have felt when they went out to help the street children in London. Torn between desire (she was stunningly beautiful and almost hypnotically attractive) and concearn, longing to do something to help.

There isn't really a point to this story, but I wanted to share it with you.
