Our idea that sexual pleasure ( and sexual pleasure alone ) should be reciprocal is a very recent one, and has created an unintended side-effect.

I wouldn't wish to go back to cultures or times which presumed that one gender or the other was the sole possessor of sexual desire; usually that women were chaste asexual creatures ( until they'd been defiled ) and that men were slaves to lust and temptation.

However, our sexualities do differ, both in how our bodies work and how our minds think. The notion that they don't ( or shouldn't ) has lead to a lot of misery in turning Heterosex into the search for that rare creature; the simultaneous orgasm. This is the ultimate extension of the idea that sexual gratification MUST be parallel in order not to be exploitive. And yet, it happens rarely, and is difficult to achieve outside of Tantric sex. ( And, as one wag put it, life is too short for Tantric sex. )

Of course this sort of thinking is also the result of the idea that the only way to treat everyone fairly is to presume that they're all the same. ( Which too often only results in the power elites treating women as men-in-drag, and ethnic minorities as if they were all aspiring to be white. )
